Cape May | April, 2024

A gray sparrow with a white eyering, pink bill, and reddish feathers on its head, cheek, and back perched in a bayberry bush that is mostly buds with small leaves starting to grow at the ends. The bird's soft colors blend in with the soft gray background.

We usually visit Cape May in late May because I like to see the shorebirds on the Delaware Bay. Well, this year that just didn’t work out, so we wound up visiting in late April instead. Cape May’s never disappointing in terms of nature, so while there weren’t the big numbers of shorebirds feeding on horseshoe crab eggs yet, there were of course lots of others, along with some nice sights I’d usually miss, like the beach plums in bloom.
