Summer at Liberty State park is a time of wading birds and frequent visits from the Common Terns. Birds are busy nesting; a highlight for me over the summer was seeing a family of Clapper Rails that had nested in the marsh at Caven Point. Both Black- and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons are around at each visit, mainly preferring the tidal pond and mud flats at Caven Point as well as Caven Creek. The Barn Swallow below was seen perched in the phragmites along Caven Creek early one morning. The swallows nest under the green bridge that crosses the creek as well as under parts of the waterfront walkway.
